Sleeping at camp
A good night decides whether a family wants to camp again. Compare cots, air mattresses and sleeping bags by how you camp, the floor space in your tent and how cold the nights get. Kids' bags and pads have their own picks.

Frequently asked questions
Cot or air mattress for family camping?
A cot keeps you off cold ground and packs flat, but it takes floor space. An air mattress is softer and fits small tents, but it needs a pump, can leak and feels cold without insulation. For cold nights, add an insulated pad to either one.
How do I pick a kid's sleeping bag?
Choose a bag sized for the child rather than one to grow into, since extra space is more cold air to warm up. Check the temperature rating against the nights you expect, and look for a zipper your child can use alone.
What temperature rating do I need?
Pick a bag rated below the coldest night you expect, and leave some margin if you sleep cold. Ratings assume you have a pad under you, so add an insulated pad on cold nights.
